Memorial Scholarship

This memorial scholarship is awarded to a student from an underserved or underrepresented community. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated community involvement. Adult learners and students pursuing degrees in psychology or related fields are encouraged to apply.
This memorial scholarship is named in memory of founder Valyncia Thomas’s mother— affectionately known as Dee, or Mama Dee—who passed after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. She held her Associate’s degree in psychology and was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in the same field at the time of her passing. In addition to spending time with her loved ones and traveling the world with her daughter, Dee Waged Hope at Pancreatic Cancer Action Network PurpleStride events as the face of “Team Mama Dee.” Mama Dee was committed, along with her team, to bringing awareness to pancreatic cancer and helping to increase the survival rates and lessen the plight of those affected by pancreatic cancer. Mama Dee’s family continues to participate in PurpleStride events annually in her memory.
Mama Dee was encouraged to never give up. She fought with grace, strength, and beauty to the very end. Mama Dee’s family hopes that her fight continues to serve as an inspiration to others afflicted by serious illnesses and life-altering diseases and events. The family hopes that this scholarship will help the recipient achieve their goals and make a difference in the world.
